June 8, 2010The New Brunswick Health Research Foundation (NBHRF) and Canada’s Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (Rx&D) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at forging a partnership.
The objective of the MOU is to establish collaboration guidelines that will enable the parties to 1) dialogue on health research and innovation as part of a provincial committee, and 2) discuss the development of public/private investment models that will support priority areas of health innovation and research based on the needs in New Brunswick.

The intent of the first is to provide a forum for the parties to liaise with relevant government departments to share ideas, dialogue, and explore opportunities to implement innovation in the health care system and to bring innovative medicines to New Brunswickers.

The latter goal is to establish an investment framework in health research and innovation in New Brunswick. Discussions will focus on the creation of a collaborative health research and innovation fund for the Province, and identifying the goals, objectives and key principles of such fund.

New Brunswick Health Research Foundation to lead the development of a Provincial Health Research Strategy

The NBHRF is in the process of leading the development of a Provincial Health Research Strategy that will be recommended to government on completion.

Why a provincial health research strategy?
We currently have four universities, two regional health authorities, two distributed medical education programs, and numerous other institutes and organizations conducting health research in the Province, but we lack a provincial strategy to provide a long term vision and direction for the future. Our aim is to develop a comprehensive, stakeholder-driven strategy to provide that long term vision, and also to identify opportunities and mechanisms for building capacity and investing strategically in health research and innovation in New Brunswick.

Specifically, this Provincial Health Research Strategy will:

  • Define the goals (short and long term)
  • Describe the current health research landscape, including gaps and areas for future growth in order to build and coordinate the health research infrastructure in NB
  • Identify key principles/goals/criteria for maximizing investment in health research in NB
  • Identify the roles of Government and other strategic partners in building capacity for health research in NB
  • Identify the role of the Government through the NBHRF in building capacity for health research.

The consultation process
Extensive province-wide consultations are planned, including approximately 30 key informant interviews and eight focus groups comprised of representatives from the broad health research community. The time frame for these consultations is April - July 2010. A discussion paper in support of this process is available here.
