Requirements Guide

Purpose
The NBHRF Bridge Grant Program is intended to sustain existing research capacity and to provide continuous support for health researchers in New Brunswick that have not obtained funding at any national level competition but have scored at the fundable level.

Scope
Research supported must be in a field of human health research, defined broadly as encompassing biomedical science, clinical research, health services and systems research, and research on the cultural, social, and environmental determinants of population health.

Funding

The program is offered annually, subject to availability of funding. The grant:

·         may be up to $35,000 for 12 to 18 months

Duplicate Funding

If an applicant holds a research award from another agency for the same research project, the NBHRF award will be reduced by the amount awarded from the other agency to ensure efficient use of public funds.   As well, if Bridge Grant recipients receive a grant or award after they have received a NBHRF grant, the Foundation must be notified. The NBHRF grant will be adjusted accordingly. A Bridge Grant recipient may not decline another previously-offered grant or award in order to accept a NBHRF grant.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, the investigator must:

·         Submit an application to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) or any other national funding agency (i.e. NSERC, any nationally charity with a peer reviewed process) for funding under their Operating Grant Awards.   Once the application has been through the peer review process and scored the equivalent of 3.75 or above (for example, in a ranking system the application must have been ranked in the top one third of the number of applications received), the investigator must submit the application to NBHRF for consideration.   The original application to the agency and all agency peer review comments and evaluations must be submitted to NBHRF through the online application process.

·         Present a project that is self-contained and conducted within a 12-18 month period.

·         Be affiliated with a New Brunswick university, research institution, health service organization, voluntary health agency or non-profit research organization. Please note: students will not be funded as principal investigators.

·         Be a New Brunswick resident, applying through a New Brunswick Institution. 100% of the research must be performed in the province of New Brunswick.
