Requirements Guide

This program rewards excellence and provides assistance for students undertaking their own research project or program as part of their thesis based degree studies at a Master’s program at a New Brunswick university, college or research institution.

Research supported must be in a field of human health research, defined broadly as encompassing biomedical science, clinical research, health services and systems research, and research on the cultural, social, and environmental determinants of population health.   The student must be under the supervision of at least one researcher (i.e. supervisor) who has an academic appointment at a New Brunswick university, college or research institution.

Important Dates

  • Application Deadline: 4:00 p.m., May 1, each year  
  • Funding Decisions by: June 30, each year
  • Funding Start Date: Sept. 1, each year

The program is offered annually, subject to availability of funding. The grant:

  • Is two years in duration at up to $17,000/yr ;
  • May be used to match funds from another agency, provided that the request to the other agency has already been submitted or approved at the time of application to NBHRF and that all NBHRF requirements and processes are followed.

​Funding will be issued to the host academic institution and be paid subject to their scholarship and trainee payment processes.  (In most institutions, the student’s academic fees are deducted from the total award and the difference is issued to the student on a monthly basis).

Duplicate Funding
If an applicant holds a research award from another agency for the same research project, the NBHRF award will be reduced by the amount awarded from the other agency to ensure efficient use of public funds.   As well, if recipients receive a grant or award after they have received a NBHRF grant, the Foundation must be notified. The NBHRF grant will be adjusted accordingly. A recipient may not decline another previously-offered grant or award in order to accept a NBHRF grant.

Application Instructions at a Glance
The checklist below shows the steps an applicant will need to follow to submit an online application to NBHRF for the Master’s Studentship competition:

  • Complete an updated online Canadian Common CV using the template entitled "NBHRF Template".  
  • Complete the online application form (including all fields with an asterisk (*) if the required fields are not filled out your application will not be processed for review) and prepare all required attachment documents including a scanned completed signature page and a scanned transcript;
  • Submit online application with all attachments. (See below)


To be eligible, the student or trainee (principal applicant) must:

  • Submit an application to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) or any other national funding agency (i.e. NSERC, any nationally peer reviewed Charity) for funding under Master’s Awards. Once results of the peer review for the competition have been made available to the applicant, and the applicant has scored the equivalent of 3.5 or above, but has not been funded by any partner agencies in the competition, the applicant may submit the application to NBHRF for consideration.   The applicant must submit their original application and all review comments and evaluations to NBHRF through the online process.
  • Propose original research which is directly relevant to the health of New Brunswickers (courses in research methods would not meet this requirement).
  • At the time of application, be accepted into a thesis-based full-time graduate program at a New Brunswick university, college or research institution (programs that require a major research project or practicum are not considered thesis-based programs). Funds are released to that institution under the name of the supervisor.
  • Not hold a remunerated academic appointment.
  • Be registered at a New Brunswick university, college or research institution for the tenure of the award and confirm registration status as per the program of study outlined in the original application.
  • Applications will be accepted within fifteen months of the date of the original decision notification of the national granting agency.

Current grant recipients may apply for a subsequent award if their current grant will be completed on or before the funding start date of the new competition and their new application is for another program.  Students with NBHRF funding who do not submit a final report or any other required documentation will be ineligible for future NBHRF research funding.

Applicants are encouraged to apply to other agencies simultaneously and are required to inform NBHRF of any applications submitted, or funds received during the review period of the NBHRF competition.

Requirements for NBHRF Master’s Studentship Applications

  • Grant applications must be completed (including all fields with an asterisk (*) if the required fields are not filled out your application will not be processed for review) & submitted online through the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation website. Ensure the following sections are completed: Project Information, Funding Sources, Student Supervisor (s), Short Abstract, Required Additional Documents and Signatures.
  • No additional documents will be accepted prior to or after the submission deadline. (see below for attachments)
  • Completion and submission of a Canadian Common CV  using the template entitled "NBHRF Template" for applicants and supervisors is required. It must be downloaded from the Canadian Common CV website and then uploaded as an attachment to the NBHRF application using the "Choose Files" button on the online application form. Each CV must be uploaded separately.
  • Your electronic signature page document (obtained by scanning the paper copy after signatures have been obtained) must be uploaded separately as an attachment using the "Choose Files” button on the application form and named “signature page”. There is no need to submit the paper copy of the signature page; the electronic scanned version will be sufficient.
  • Complete applications must be submitted online by 4:00 pm AST, May 1st.   If the 1st falls on a weekend, the application must be submitted online the next business day by 4:00 pm AST.
  • Grants are made for 24 months. Both successful and unsuccessful applicants may apply again in subsequent years.
  • Individual investigators may not hold concurrent funding under this and/or any other NBHRF program.

Please ensure that your application is complete (including all (*) fields and required signatures) and submitted on time to NBHRF. Failure to do so will result in an invalid application that will not be eligible for review.

Required Attachment Documents (before submitting the online application return to this section and ensure all these documents are uploaded in your online form)

  • Attachment 1: *Plain Language Project Summary (maximum 1 page) (see below for formatting)
    Outline the proposed research project. Applicants should provide an appropriate synopsis of their proposed research including research question(s) approaches, methods and literature, and any preliminary results etc. Upload under the section " Application Details Attachments"
  • Attachment 2: *Relevance of Project/Program to Health Research in New Brunswick  (maximum 1 page) (see below for formatting). 
    Demonstrate the relevance of the proposed research project to the mandate of the NBHRF and how the research will potentially contribute to improving the health of New Brunswickers. Upload under the section " Application Details Attachments"
  • Attachment 3: Information on and Breakdown of Other Sources of Funding for the Project 
    Amount, Source, Conditions. Upload under the section " Application Details Attachments"
  • Attachment 4: Copy of Applicable National Agency Application, Notice of Recommendation and Comments from the Peer Review 
    Submit a copy of the relevant application together with decision and review comments and notifications.  You will have to upload these as documents using the “Choose Files” button on your application. Upload under the section " Application Details Attachments"
  • Attachment 5: Scanned transcript Upload under the section " Application Details Attachments"
  • Attachment 6: CCV for student and supervisor (s) (draft will not be accepted) Upload under section "CCV Attachments"
  • Attachment 7: Scanned completed signature page Upload under the section " Application Details Attachments"

Applicants are to ensure headings are included as outlined above and that page limitations are respected. 

Canadian Common CV
A completed Canadian Common CV must be created (and/or updated) in the Canadian Common CV system for the applicant and their supervisor(s) as part of the NBHRF Master’s Studentship application process. Using the CV Funding option, select Funding Source NBHRF, and then select CV Type NBHRF Template.  A CCV can be uploaded as a document through the “Choose Files” button on your application.

Please note that a “Draft” CCV will not be accepted as part of your application.  Please ensure that you
upload the correct version of your CCV in your NBHRF application.  


Applicant (Principal Investigator)

Please enter the applicant's name on the online application and sign. 
Please enter the name of the Dean/Department Head/Manager on the online application, and have them sign the signature page.
Please enter the name of the person who has the authority to bind the institution or organization to the general conditions governing grants and awards and have them sign the "Institution (To be signed by Authorized Official)" box.

Application Submission - Read Carefully
Ensure you review the application for completeness (including all (*) fields) and accuracy prior to submitting as you will not have access for editing after you click the submit button.

Ensure that all attachments (files) (see above), CCV and signature page are uploaded with your application using the “Choose Files” button prior to submission.

DO NOT submit your application prior to receiving the appropriate signatures.  The signature information is the last section of the application.  Once entered ensure to “Save Draft”.  Print your PDF (go to View scroll to the bottom of the page and click on View PDF). You may logout of the application at this time.  Your information will be saved because you clicked “Save Draft”.   Obtain the required signatures on the page, scan it and log back into your account.  Click the "Edit" button on your Portfolio page.   Click the “Choose Files” button under "Application Details Attachments" and upload the scanned signature page. Click the Signature Acquired boxes.

It is important that you obtain signatures BEFORE you submit this application. After you Submit, you will not be able to make changes. You must review your application with each of the primary stakeholders and obtain their signatures. The signature on the pdf signature page must match the Signature Acquired name entered on the online application. (Example: You realized (or been told) that you have an incorrect name entered on your pdf for signature; you can strike out the original name and write in the appropriate name on your pdf form, and get the appropriate person to sign, HOWEVER, before submitting your application, you must return to that field in your online application and change the entry to the same name and title of the person who has signed. Your pdf signature attachment must match your online information. 

If you are finished your application, click "Submit", if you wish to make any other changes or additions, click "Save Draft" and make those changes. You will receive an e-mail advising that your application has been received.  In the e-mail you will also be given a unique application number, please ensure that you record this number for future reference.

Final Report
Grant Recipients are required to submit a Final Report within 90 days of the project end date by completing the NBHRF final report form found by logging into your NBHRF account. A project summary and the institution’s financial statement for the project must be attached as an “Final Report Attachments”   

If the project has been funded by a national agency, a copy of the agency's final report must also be included with the final report submission. Recipients who do not submit a final report or any other required documentation will be ineligible for future NBHRF research funding.
